There are two options in our Hybrid Master's Program:

East Lansing Summer Cohort
Learning Design and Technology Campus Program

East Lansing Summer Cohort

After completing the Educational Technology Certificate Program, students apply to the Master's program to join the East Lansing summer cohort. This hybrid version of the program combines the power of working together in a summer cohort with the flexibility of completing courses during the academic year. Participants come together for two weeks of face-to-face on-campus in East Lansing from June 18 - July 2, 2008 and then meet online from July 3 - August 1. On August 2, 2008 students will reconvene on campus.

This integrated seminar includes three courses: CEP800, CEP801 & CEP822

CEP 800: Learning in school and other settings
Learning as active, socially-mediated construction of knowledge in school, home, community, and work settings. What is learned, how it is taught and learned, and what learners bring to the setting.

CEP 801: Psychological development
Learner differences and commonalties Development of differences and commonalties in learners across the lifespan. Contextual influences on development. Implications for learning in schools and other settings.

CEP 822: Approaches to Ed Research
Alternative methods of educational research. Identifying researchable problems in education and developing a research proposal. Applications of descriptive and inferential statistics for analyzing and critiquing published studies.

Cohort Goals:

The hybrid summer cohort has two goals: an easy goal and a difficult one. The easy one is to learn about technology. Some students may already know a lot about technology and some may know less, but learning how to use the technology is the easy goal. The difficult goal is figuring out what to do with the knowledge of specific technologies to help students learn and to develop professionally. This is where things get messy and confusing. Clear answers are hard to come by, in fact sometimes it may not even be clear what the problems are. The goal of the summer cohort is to make some headway into these issues. This three-course, integrated seminar brings together a study of technology, teaching and learners. Throughout the time together on-campus and online students will explore various uses of technology and what is currently known--or believed--about human learning and development. After all, in order to use technology in meaningful ways, we must understand who it is that will use the technology and their abilities at a specific age and/or grade.

Staying on-campus:

For the focused study on campus, students may choose to live on the beautiful MSU campus, taking advantage of the numerous cultural and recreational opportunities available here during the summer. Arrangements have been made for students to stay in Owen Graduate Hall at a rate of $36/night. $8.50 per day of the $36 dollar fee can be used towards breakfast, lunch or dinner in the residence hall cafeteria.

Completing the Program:

During the following academic year, students will complete three additional online courses and then return to campus the following summer for CEP 807: Capstone in Educational Technology. During your time in the East Lansing summer cohort you will meet with your academic advisor to create an individual program plan.

Learning, Design and Technology Concentration

This concentration area, which is available only on the East Lansing campus, is intended for educational professionals interested in the design and evaluation of technology-rich-on-line and desktop learning environments, including web-based and other multimedia tools. Students must complete 30 course credits and a final evaluation.
